Veteran Guyanese powerlifters, Nadina Taharally and Roger Rogers both shattered FESUPO (South American Powerlifting Federation) records enroute to winning silver medals in their respective weight classes at the World Classic and Equipped Masters Powerlifting Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, yesterday.

Taharally, already the holder of numerous national, FESUPO and Pan American records, set a new bar in the Masters II Classic 76KG weight class. Her squat of 150kg in Mongolia is a new Pan American and FESUPO record while her bench press of 77.5KG also set a new Pan American record. Meanwhile her deadlift of 182.5KG set the new standard for Pan American and FESUPO records. A total of 410KG also set new records for Pan America and FESUPO. Notably, Taharally also holds the Master’s I Pan American squat, bench press deadlift and total records which she set back in 2021.

Taharally managed to finish ahead of Great Britain’s Franka Ramsome (Squat 130KG, Bench Press 60KG, Deadlift 167.5KG, Total 357.5KG) who took bronze while Canada’s Sylvia Atkinson took gold with a squat of 182.5KG, bench press of 82.5KG and a deadlift of 198KG to total 457.5KG.  Over in the Masters II Classic 120KG category, Rogers found himself winning silver with a FESUPO record 262.5KG squat while he bench pressed 162.5KG and dead lifted 255KG for a grand total of 680KG. Another Canadian, Scott Robertson claimed gold with a total of 800KG (squat 310KG, bench press 205KG, deadlift 285KG). Closing out the podium was Great Britain’s Darrel Greville.

Taharally and Rogers have continued the trend of Guyana’s powerlifting athletes always returning home with hardware in recent times. The duo, who are both part of RipHit Strength and Conditioning group, were coached by Martin Webster ahead of the championships with Great Britain’s Jackie Blasberry lending assistance to the duo in Mongolia.
