Xavio Alexander and Mishka Beharry reigned supreme in the boys and girls’ U-19 singles events of the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) national junior tournament.

Sponsored by the National Sports Commission, Ruel Rambirche copped the boy’s U15 singles title while Maliah Hayley took the girls’ equivalent.

In the U11 category, Ethan Bulkan and Anjaneysa Godette were the winners of the boy’s and girl’s events.

The tournament, which began Thursday, saw two triple champions emerging

in the U15 category with Rambirche winning gold in the boy’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles events and Beharry winning gold in the U19 girls singles and doubles and mixed doubles event as well.

Speaking to Stabroek Sport at the conclusion of the tournament, GBA President, Emily Ramdhani, said that it was heartening to see the turnout at the junior level and expressed her gratitude to Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, for his invaluable support. She said that the Director had issued a challenge to take the sport country wide, something she noted that the GBA takes seriously and will be pursuing. To that end, she hinted that the GBA will be making moves to take the sport to Essequibo in a bid to broaden the talent pool of badminton.
