A Williamsburg businessman died yesterday morning after he was struck in his head by a man who broke into his supermarket.

Dead is Akbhar Sain, 59, who operated Sain’s Supermarket along the Williamsburg, Corentyne Public Road.

Alert residents coupled with swift action by the police resulted in the lone bandit being nabbed in the upper flat of the building following the 2.30 am robbery.

According to the Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus, the police received information about a break-and-enter at the location yesterday morning. After arriving at the scene, ranks noticed that the grill and glass door to the front of the supermarket had been prised open.

Bacchus, in briefing the media yesterday morning, said that ranks then made further checks where Sain’s body was discovered on the ground inside the shop with blood on his face.

The police said that the cashier area had been ransacked and the businessman’s licensed firearm, a .32 pistol and a magazine with eight .32 rounds of ammunition, were seen close to his body.

At that stage, police then continued to search the premises. Around 5 a.m., as ranks entered the upper flat of the building where Sain resided, towards the back verandah of the house, the suspect was seen hiding behind a washing machine on the verandah.

The suspect identified as Satesh Ramnaresh of Hampshire Village, Corentyne, then reportedly attempted to run resulting in the police discharging a round in his direction which hit him on his right hand.

After searching the man, police discovered several coils of money stashed in his pants and crotch area. He was then taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was treated for his injury.

The police said that Ramnaresh has since confessed to police saying that he broke into the location and a scuffle ensued between him and the businessman during which he used a piece of wood and lashed Sain in his head causing him to fall to the ground.

He then went into the premises where he stole the money which was found in his possession.

Blackout

One of Sain’s neighbours, Shanta Jaglall, yesterday told Stabroek News, that there was a blackout at the time and another neighbour called her to inform her that “someone a bruk the door, Akbhar door to go in and me seh if them call Akbhar and them seh them call the phone and he na answer so then me call and me keep calling and then we call a cellphone number and he seh he a come down that he go alright we tell him be careful.”

Jaglall said, she immediately phoned the Rose Hall Outpost and informed them of the suspected break and enter, and “them say alright just now and be time me put down the phone me hear he (Akbhar) gee one holla and me call back the station and the station say the patrol coming.”

Shortly after the patrol arrived, all of the neighbours rushed over to the location and Sain’s body was discovered.

The businessman’s body is presently at the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem report. His family members who are overseas are expected to travel to Guyana this week.

A relative at the scene yesterday said that Sain, a father of three, operated his business for over forty years and was an upstanding member of society as he would often make charitable donations to different persons and organizations. She said, “No matter how busy he was, if you had a problem he was always willing to give a listening ear. Mr. Akbhar Sain would give a part of him if necessary to anybody who came and asked. The community all respected him and his generosity is known.”
