Corentyne man remanded over supermarket owner’s murder

A Corentyne man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of Akbhar Sain, owner of Sain’s Supermarket of Williamsburg, Corentyne.

Satish Ramnaris also known as ‘Chico’, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh where he was charged with the murder of Akbhar Sain, 59.

The charge stated that that between Tuesday October, 17 and Wednesday October, 18, he murdered Sain of Williamsburg, Corentyne in the furtherance of a robbery.

Ramnaris was not required to plead to the charge yesterday and was remanded to prison. He will return to court on November, 7.

On Wednesday morning, Shivpersaud Bacchus told Stabroek News, that they received information about a break-and-enter at Sain’s residence. After arriving at the scene, ranks noticed that the grills and glass door to the front of the supermarket had been prised open.

Bacchus, in briefing the media, said that ranks then made further checks where Sain’s body was discovered on the ground inside the shop with blood on his face.

The police said, that the cashier area was ransacked, and the businessman’s licensed firearm, a .32 pistol and a magazine with eight .32 rounds of ammunition, were seen close to his body.

At that stage, police then continued to search the premises and canvassed the area. However, around 5 a.m., as ranks entered the upper flat of the building where Sain resided, towards the back verandah of the house, the accused was seen hiding behind a washing machine located on the verandah.

Ramnaris of Hampshire Village, Corentyne, then reportedly attempted to run resulting in the police discharging a round in his direction which caught him on his right hand causing him to fall to the ground.

After searching the bandit, police discovered several coils of money stashed in his pants and crotch area. He was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was treated for his injury.
