Guard shot while attempting to rob miner still in hospital – police

The 21-year-old security guard of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, who was shot in his right leg on Wednesday after being involved in an attempted robbery is still hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital according to Regional Commander 4 ‘C’, Senior Superintendent Khali Pareshram.

The commander said yesterday that the investigation is still ongoing in the matter as the other two suspects are still at large.

A police report stated that a 29-year-old contractor and gold miner of Eccles, East Bank Demerara was attacked on Wednesday at the Classic Chinese Restaurant at Success Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.

During the attack, the man was relieved of his licensed 9 mm pistol by three identifiable male suspects, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

During the scuffle for the victim’s firearm, one of the suspects was shot in his right leg. All three suspects then ran out of the restaurant with the shot suspect in possession of the stolen firearm.

The contractor, using his vehicle, pursued the shot suspect, and drove into him, causing further injuries. The man retrieved his firearm and reported the incident to the police.

The injured suspect was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted and is under police guard.
