Guard wounded in attempted robbery of miner discharged from hospital

The 21-year-old security guard of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown who was shot in his right leg on October 18 after he and two other persons were involved in an attempted robbery at a Success Restaurant was yesterday discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital, Regional Commander 4 ‘C’, Senior Superintendent Khali Pareshram stated.

The Commander added that the security guard is to be arraigned tomorrow. Meanwhile, the other two suspects who managed to escape during the attempted robbery are still at large, he noted.

A police report had stated that a 29-year-old contractor and gold miner of Eccles, East Bank Demerara was attacked on October 18 at the Classic Chinese Restaurant at Success Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.

During the attack, the man was relieved of his licensed 9 mm pistol by three identifiable male suspects, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

During the scuffle for the victim’s firearm, one of the suspects was shot in his right leg. All three suspects then ran out of the restaurant with the shot suspect in possession of the stolen firearm.

The contractor, using his vehicle, pursued the shot suspect, and drove into him, causing further injuries. The man then retrieved his firearm and reported the incident to the police.

The injured suspect was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
