Suspect in shooting at Cheers and Beers bar still at large – police

The suspect who was involved in the shooting at Cheers and Beers bar located on Alexander Street, Kitty, Georgetown, has not yet been arrested,  Commander of Region 4 (A), Assistant Commissioner, Simon McBean says yesterday.

The police reported that they were alerted to the shooting about 4.30 am on Sunday, when Constable Grant who was on duty at the Kitty Police Station, reported that he heard three loud explosions similar to the sound of gunshots, coming from the northern direction on Alexander Street, Kitty.

Corporal Daniels, Constable Whoseley, and Constable Bethune, were on patrol in the area and acting on information received, proceeded to the Cheers and Beers bar. When they arrived there, a 32-year-old security officer of J&M Security Service, Vernon Hardin, who was on duty that night, told them he was on duty at the bar armed with a licensed Taurus 9mm pistol when an identifiable man approached him at the bar. The man drew a firearm from his waist, pointed the firearm at him, and discharged two rounds.

Hardin said he responded immediately by drawing his gun from his holster and discharging a round at the suspect, who then dropped the firearm he had and ran along Alexander Street and escaped.

The firearm which was left on the ground in the vicinity of the bar, was picked up by a police rank, and when examined, it was observed to be a .45 pistol, along with a magazine containing eight live .45 rounds.

Hardin’s firearm was also taken to the police station as part of the investigation and several persons were interviewed.
