Two persons died when a truck slipped off a bridge and landed in a creek on Monday evening on the Lethem Trail, North Rupununi, in the vicinity of the Canopy Bridge.

Dead is Orlando King, a 29-year-old from North Rupununi who was the driver of lorry, GXX 5420, and occupant, Orin Fraser of Tucville, Georgetown.

The truck partially submerged in the creek after slipping off the bridge

Investigations have so far revealed that the lorry was proceeding along the Lethem trail road in the vicinity of Canopy. While crossing a wooden bridge, it slipped off and landed in the creek, which is about 25 feet below (the boards of the bridge were reported to be rotten) trapping both the driver and occupant in the cabin.

Both King and Fraser were pulled from the cabin of the lorry in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and Police ranks. They were placed in a police pickup and taken to Annai Health Center, where they both were pronounced dead. The bodies were then taken to Lethem Regional Hospital’s mortuary.
