Eight persons are now homeless after a Mon Repos house was destroyed by arson yesterday morning.

The Guyana Fire Service said that at 3:23 am, firefighters responded to a house on fire at Lot 233 Mon Repos North, Block 7, Fifth Street, East Coast Demerara.

Water tenders #95, #105, Water Carrier #16, and Ambulance #13, along with their respective crews, were immediately dispatched to the location.

Fifteen firefighters quickly got into action and managed to extinguish the blaze that had engulfed a two-storey wooden and concrete building, the release said.

The building was owned by Kurt Lalchand and occupied by Falesha Sumner and her family of seven.

The GFS said that the fire was maliciously set by person(s) unknown.

As a result, the building and its contents were destroyed, leaving eight persons homeless.

Two houses in close proximity were also affected.

Four black tanks, along with a quantity of PVC ceiling and guttering on the eastern side of both buildings, were destroyed as a result of radiated heat from the building of origin.

Two jets working from Water Tenders #95, #105 and Water Carrier # 16 tank supplies were used to extinguish the fire, the GFS said.
