A 25-year-old labourer of Charlestown, Georgetown, was arrested by police on mobile patrol at Pouderoyen, Public Road, West Bank Demerara for being in possession of an unlicensed 9mm semi-automatic pistol and fifteen 9mm rounds.

Police ranks from Regional Division 3, were on mobile patrol duty on the Pouderoyen public road, West Bank Demerara, at about 23.10 hours on Thursday, when they observed two identifiable men acting suspiciously. The men were identified as Shawn Collins, called ‘Gully’, a 25-year-old labourer of Charlestown, Georgetown, and Steffon Howard, a 23-year-old labourer of East La Penitence, Georgetown.

The ranks confronted both men and proceeded to search them. Collins had a ‘lunch pack’ that he was wearing around his shoulder, and inside was a black metal object that appeared to be a 9mm semi-automatic pistol (serial number on frame filed off) with a magazine containing fifteen 9mm rounds of ammunition.

Collins was told of the offence committed and cautioned, after which he replied: “Officer, I get this for my protection.” Both men were escorted to the Vreed-en-Hoop police outpost along with the firearm and ammunition.

While at the Vreed-en-Hoop police outpost, Collins received a call on his cellular phone. The police answered the call and an individual was heard to say: “Hey, I reach at de base hay. Weh y’all deh?”  Based on this call, ranks proceeded to the Pouderoyen public road where they observed a man, Shawn Dos Santos, a 27-year-old labourer of South Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, sitting on a motorcycle.

A rank then called back the number from the call at the police outpost, whereupon Dos Santos’ cellphone rang. He was promptly questioned and gave conflicting stories to the police. He was then arrested and escorted to the Vreed-en-Hoop police outpost.

The three suspects, along with the exhibits, were escorted to the Leonora Police Station, and placed into custody, pending further investigation.
