Traditional foes St Pius, West Ruimveldt clash for finals spot

With a place in the coveted final up for grabs, the semifinal section of the Courts Pee Wee Football Championship will occur today at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.

In the first semifinal at 14:00 hours, Redeemer will lock horns with Potaro. In the second semifinal, St. Pius will match skills with traditional foe West Ruimveldt at 15:00 hrs.

Troy Mendonca, Co-Director of Petra Organisation, said, “First of all, the teams that are in the  semifinals deserve to be there. We have a traditional matchup in St. Pius and West Ruimveldt and an unknown encounter in Redeemer and Potaro, but I expect two very competitive and scintillating games.”

He added, “St. Pius and West Ruimveldt are arguably the biggest rivalries in the tournament, and I’m very excited to see that game. I really can’t pick a winner. In the other match, Redeemer is a team that has been together for two years and has given a great account of itself, but you can’t take anything away from Potaro, who are very organized. It’s very hard to call these matches.”

Prior to the semifinal segment, the 5-16 positional plate division will occur. Den Amstel will oppose Marian Academy at 12:00 hrs, while Enterprise will battle St. Stephen’s at 13:00 hrs.

The winner of the tournament will receive the championship trophy, gold medals, and a pair of uniforms. Each player will also be presented with an electronic tablet. The runners-up will collect a trophy, silver medals, and six balls. The third-place finisher will pocket a trophy and four balls, while the fourth-place side will walk away with a trophy.

On the individual side, a trophy and a pair of football cleats will be presented to the eventual most valuable player, highest goal scorer, and best goalkeeper.
