Two West Bank Demerara men who had been fingered in the 2018 murder of Westminster phone card vendor—Ron Mansfield—are currently awaiting sentencing after admitting guilt to the charge.

At their recent arraignment, Alexander La Cruz and Mark Welch pleaded guilty to the capital charge.

They accepted that on June 19th, 2018 they murdered the 37-year-old father of two, of 772 Westminster, West Bank Demerara.

High Court Judge, Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall, before whom they appeared, has deferred sentencing to November 16th, to first hear from probation and other social impact reports.

Mansfield had been attacked and shot in the chest sometime around 8.30 on the night in question, in what was believed to be a robbery.

He was reportedly returning home from selling phone cards on his motorcycle.

He succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

Following the incident, police in a statement had said that, “the victim who was discovered with a suspected gunshot injury to the body was reportedly returning from selling phone cards on his motorcycle.”

“His bag containing his phone cards and money was not found”, the police said.
