Extraordinary sitting of National Assembly on territorial integrity set for Monday

Government and Opposition Chief Whips, Gail Teixeira and Christopher Jones respectively, along with shadow foreign minister Amanza Walton-Desir have met and reached an agreement on the Extraordinary Sitting of the National Assembly in relation to the country’s territorial integrity and tensions with Venezuela.

In a statement, the two sides said: “We are pleased to announce that we have agreed to the convening of an Extraordinary Sitting of the National Assembly, scheduled for Monday, November 6th at 10 a.m. The primary objective of this Assembly is to pass a motion expressing the unwavering and unified support of the country’s parliamentary parties and the Guyanese people for all efforts to defend the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Furthermore, the sitting serves to re-emphasize our continued recognition of the 1899 Arbitral Award as the final settlement of the country’s border with Venezuela”.

Parliament Office sent out a notice yesterday stating that the sitting will begin at 10 am on Monday 6th of November.

The agreement on the date came after complaints on Tuesday by the opposition that the government had backtracked on  seeking a mutually agreed date.
