The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Limited (GBTI) raised $3.7m in the wake of the Mahdia Dormitory fire in May that claimed 20 lives and on Friday handed over the money to the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).

A press release from the bank said that GBTI’s Marketing Manager, Pernell Cummings handed over the funds in the form of a cheque to the Director General of the CDC Colonel (Retired) Nazrul Hussain at the CDC’s Thomas Lands Headquarters.

GBTI not only contributed to the fund but also sought support from its customers and the public, the release said. The fund was closed at the end of August, and the raised funds will be channeled through the CDC to provide support to those affected by the tragedy.

GBTI expressed its gratitude to all those who contributed to the fund.
