The Government of Guyana has distributed 178 solar panels and accessories to a number of villages in Upper Berbice River.

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, handed over the electrical systems to the communities.

DeVeldt Village received 123 of the photovoltaic systems and fifty-five panels were distributed between Fort Nassau and Gateroy Savannah. At the handing over ceremony, Laxley Lindie, Chairman of the Community Development Council, said that the panels will bring immediate relief to residents. “I know that this is a big relief to people. I am thankful to know that this could have been done in our community,” Lindie stated.

Meanwhile, Edghill reminded residents of his government’s development initiatives, with a particular focus on the delivery of solar panels, public works, health, and education.

“These solar panels are three times the size of the ones that we distributed before. It’s 165 watts and since the place is hot these days, along with the panel everyone is getting a fan,” the minister explained. A Department of Public Information (DPI) press release stated that the distribution is in keeping with government’s commitment to deliver 30,000 solar panels to families in riverine communities, bridging the electricity supply gap between the hinterland and the coastland.
