A West Coast Berbice pensioner and her two sons are now homeless and contemplating their next move after a fire completely destroyed their home on Tuesday afternoon at Number 12 Village.

According to Sukhwantie Ramnarine, 60, of Lot 64 Number 12 Village, she left home around 2 am on Tuesday en route to the Bourda Market where she sells vegetables, while her sons: ages 19 and 21 left home just around 8 am.

She explained, that while she was returning home after selling just around 5 pm, she was informed that her house was completely engulfed in flames. She said that by the time she arrived home the entire house was in flames and nothing could be saved.

According to the woman, the two-storey wooden and concrete house had four bedrooms and was completely furnished. She said that she plied her trade over the last ten years as a vendor and built her house with modern amenities so that she and her two children could live in comfort.

Additionally, she said she had $500,000 in the house along with new items she had purchased for Christmas – all of which were completely destroyed by the fire.

The devastated woman estimated her total losses to be over $10m stressing that she was unsure what could have caused the fire as they would always ensure that all of the appliances are unplugged before leaving home.

The family is seeking the public’s assistance in rebuilding and can be contacted at 675-9448.
