Man died by hanging in police lockups – autopsy

A post-mortem examination  was done on November 15 on the body of Lloyd David — who died in custody at Providence Police Station, and the cause of death was given as compression to the neck as a result of hanging.

The 56-year-old man had been arrested based on a report of the sexual assault of a minor. The man was booked and placed into custody, where he joined two other persons in the lockups. He later reportedly  assaulted one of the arrested persons, who had to be sent for medical attention. Due to his violent behaviour, the release said David was then placed in a cell by himself.  However, about half an hour later the person in the neighbouring cell shouted that he had had taken his own life.

His death is now being investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
