Student arrested after striking traffic rank in the head

A male student of an East Coast Demerara school has been arrested after striking a male police rank in the head with a piece of wood yesterday afternoon.

According to the information received by Stabroek News, the student was involved in an altercation with another student and as a result he armed himself with a piece of wood. A teacher instructed him to put the piece of wood down and he refused. At this point, the traffic rank intervened and told the student to put the wood down. The student then attacked the traffic rank and struck him in the head with the piece of wood.

The rank was rushed to the CC Nicholson Hospi-tal, Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara. His medical condition up to press time is unknown

The injured police officer was identified as Rameshwar Chunilall, a traffic rank attached to the Cove and John Police Station.

Stabroek News was told that at the time of the attack, Chunilall was performing traffic duties in front of the school.

The student was arrested and is in police custody assisting with investigations.
