A post-mortem examination conducted on the 12-year-old, who was stung by a scorpion has revealed that she died as a result of anaphylactic shock.

Zaleena Boyer died on Wednesday after being bitten by a scorpion.

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction. The reaction comes as a result of someone being exposed to either something they are allergic to or a reaction to being stung by something.

In this case, Boyer, who hailed from the remote community of Wauna in the Mabaruma sub-region, felt a pain in her foot after putting on her shoes to head to school on Tuesday.

She later told a relative who then took her to the health centre and she was later transferred to the Mabaruma hospital, where she died.

A lab test later found that the young girl also had pneumonia.

Initially, it was believed that child may have died as a result of improper treatment at the health facility she attended.

However, the child’s aunt in an interview with Stabroek News related that during the time spent at the hospital, her niece was given the attention she needed.

The aunt, who was with Boyer during her final moments confirmed that the hospital staff tried their best and stated that she was unaware of any sort of mistreatment.

As it relates to pneumonia, the aunt pointed out that this came as a surprise since all her niece had was a common cold about a week ago.
