Stand firm and commit to protect our nation’s interests while advocating a peaceful resolution to the border issue

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my support for the unified approach taken by both the Opposition and government in dealing with the critical situation regarding the Essequibo County. As the Mayor of Georgetown, I believe it is crucial for us to stand together as a nation during this challenging time. The historical context of the Essequibo dispute dates back to the 19th century when Venezuela laid claim to the territory, which was then part of British Guiana. The issue escalated in 1966 when Guyana gained independence, and Venezuela refused to recognize the 1899 Arbitral Award that had settled the border between British Guiana and Venezuela. Since then, tensions have persisted, with Venezuela continuing to assert its claim over Essequibo.

It is important for us to understand that Essequibo holds significant historical and strategic importance for Guyana. The region is rich in natural resources and has immense potential for economic development. Therefore, it is imperative for us to safeguard our territorial integrity and sovereignty. In light of recent events, it is commendable to see both the Opposition and government coming together to address this critical issue. It sends a powerful message of unity and strength to both our citizens and the international community. I urge all Guyanese citizens to remain calm and united as we navigate through this challenging period.

It is crucial for us to continue engaging in diplomatic efforts and international forums to seek a peaceful resolution to this dispute. We must also emphasize the importance of upholding international law and respecting established boundaries. I call upon our citizens to show resilience and solidarity during this time. Let us stand firm in our commitment to protecting our nation’s interests while advocating for a peaceful resolution to the border dispute.

Sincerely,

His Worship Alfred Mentore COA.,
