Dharry `training hard’ for pivotal bout

With less than two weeks to go for the mega year-end boxing card, the combatants are ramping up their preparation.

Chief among them is the December 9 event headliner, Elton Dharry who has his hard hat on putting in sweat soaked workouts at the world famous Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, New York.

The USA-based Dharry will headline the event at the National Stadium or the Everest Cricket Club ground with  Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques in the co-feature.

The event which has an international flavour with a blend of talented youth and experience will also usher in the return of Imran ‘Magic’ Khan. A female bout is also scheduled to be staged.

Dharry who will face Ecuadorean, Rafael ‘El Campeon’ Tirado Gordillo, gave an update on his training.

“Training has been going good” said Dharry yesterday. He disclosed that he cannot wait to get back into the ring. Dharry who has large fan base in the 592, will fight for the spoils of the WBA Gold super flyweight title and aims to put on a show.

“I am training hard and I am looking forward to coming back home and putting on a show for my fans who always support me. As always I am coming to win, if the knockout comes, I will definitely take it but I am coming to win this fight even if it goes the distance.”

December 9 is an all-important date for Dharry, 36, and his career.

The winner of the Dharry/Gordillo matchup will ascend to the number one contender for the coveted WBA World title.

Tickets are set to go on sale soon. The all pro fixture is sanctioned by the WBA and the Guyana Boxing Board of Control and will be organized by Nexgen Global Promotions, Briso Promotions and Jack Bharat in association with the Everest Cricket Club and the Ministry of Sport. (Emmerson Campbell)
