We want to remain Guyanese, not citizens of Venezuela

Dear Editor,

On the third of December 2023, Venezuela plans to vote for a referendum that could give the green light for that country to invade and annex the Essequibo County, which is a big chunk of Guyana, to that country. If this happens, we the people of the entire Guyana will be unhappy because this will be against our purpose and survival. We don’t want to be citizens of Venezuela; we want to be happy and peaceful Guyanese, who are proud to say “Essequibo is we own!” We are happy Guyanese who always strive to live in peace which comes from being deeply rooted in this land. We own Essequibo and won’t give a blade of grass to powerful Goliaths who want to drive fear in us who they perceive as the underdogs.

This being said, let’s put our trust in Divine intervention, as in the story of little David who defeated Goliath. Not to literally fight with violence but to pray for the Almighty to direct the good spirit to change the plans of Maduro and for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to rule on behalf of vulnerable Guyana so that Essequibo can be free from those who seek to seize our land and us a peaceful people. We must be awake and alert to the strange invader who could encroach on our lands. We must continue to live free from fear of threats of Venezuela’s invasion which can impact us during this time of our love for Guyana. This bully attitude of Venezuela towards our young nation that is now trying to find its way on the global stage must stop and that country must leave us to live in peace and tranquility in our paradise, Essequibo, which belongs to our beautiful and blessed country.

Sincerely,

Medino Abraham
