Forty-one-year-old Jermaine Benjamin, a coconut vendor of 47 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, appeared yesterday before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

It was alleged that on January 1, while at Brummel Place, Georgetown, Benjamin had in his possession, 343 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The court heard that on the day in question at around 10:30, police intercepted the accused while he was on a bike carrying a plastic bag containing a bulky substance. A search revealed the cannabis packaged in small ziplock bags in a manner similar to the way the substance would normally be sold.

Benjamin was subsequently arrested and taken to the Alberttown police station.

The magistrate refused bail and he was remanded to prison pending a report in the matter.

His next court appearance will be January 24.
