A huge fire destroyed a bond at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara yesterday afternoon and damaged two nearby businesses.

When Stabroek News arrived at the scene an eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, related that the fire started at approximately 13:00 hours. Smoke was first observed coming from the centre of the bond that is said to be owned by White Boy Auto Spares.  The eyewitness said that several calls were made to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) but by the time they arrived on the scene, the fire had grown significantly.

Efforts by contractors working along the Railway Embankment on the road expansion project and public-spirted citizens to extinguish the small blaze at the time proved futile.

“You know how long this thing start and it was small. When it start it was little smoke… nothing to talk about but you know how long we calling the fire service, by time them come the thing big,” the eyewitness claimed. A fence had to be broken for the GFS to access water to extinguish the fire.
