Last week, two senators from France visited Region One to express France’s solidarity with Guyana in the face of Venezuela’s illegitimate and baseless claim on the Essequibo region.

During their three-day mission in the Northwest, Senators Phillipe Folliot and François Bonneau toured the Amazon Caribbean (AmCar) heart of palm factory situated on the Barima River. This French-invested company plays a crucial role in supporting over 500 Amerindian families in the region.

The senators also held meetings with Region One Chairman Brentnol Ashley and his team, visited the border communities of White Water and Yarakita, and engaged with their toshaos. The primary objective of the senators’ mission was to reaffirm France’s steadfast support for Guyana’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, adherence to the rule of law, international law, and the ongoing legal proceedings before the International Court of Justice.   Upon their return to Georgetown, the senators had discussions with President Irfaan Ali, GDF Chief of Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, National Security Adviser to the President Captain Gerry Gouveia and visited the National Assembly.

The Senate, the upper house of the French Parliament, along with the National Assembly, forms the legislative body of France.
