A 22-year-old unemployed labourer, Randy Defretas of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, was charged with malicious damage to property when he appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on January 9.

It was alleged that the act was committed on a sergeant of police attached to the traffic department at his residence, Lot ‘F’ Phantom Street, Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, Region Two, on January 4.

Defretas was not required to plead to the charge.

The Administration of Justice Act was applied by the prosecutor and the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. In spite of the prosecutor’s objections, bail was granted in the sum of $100,000.

The case was adjourned to January 23 for disclosure of statements.
