The lawyer is right. Political involvement, as currently set out, particularly for the two top judicial posts ‘belongs in the dustbin’ (SN Jan 16). The AG said the same thing a while back. A new mechanism is needed. Judges are impartial, unbiased and free of political interference, yet the appointments of the two top positions are tied to a political proviso or condition. This, was not intended to be so, but it has led to gridlock and will continue to be so. The suggestion put forward by the lawyer is worthy of consideration.
