Hubu man gets four years jail for cannabis

Latchman Sankar was on Thursday jailed for  four years for possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

He appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, according to a release from the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU).

Sankar pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $49,685,000.

CANU conducted an operation at a residence in Block 1 Unity Hubu, Parika on Monday.

During the operation, a search was conducted at the residence, resulting in the discovery of several large bags containing several brick-like parcels of suspected cannabis and the arrest of two suspects who were present during the search.

Sankar, 39, of the said address, and a woman were escorted to CANU’s Headquarters along with the suspected narcotic. The narcotic tested positive for cannabis, amounting to one hundred and two  parcels weighing a total of 55.2 kg, with a total street value of approximately $20 million.
