Pitbull owner to be charged with manslaughter

The Corentyne man who is the owner of the three pit bulls that attacked and killed Latchminen Permaul at Hampshire Village, Corentyne during the wee hours of Tuesday is to be charged with manslaughter next week.

The incident happened on R&S Street at Hampshire, Corentyne.

Permaul also known as ‘Blackboy’, 64, unemployed, of Lot 249 Hampshire, Corentyne Berbice, was returning home when he fell asleep on the corner of the road as a result of intoxication. At the location, the man was attacked by the three dogs.

The Guyana Police Force yesterday received legal advice to charge the owner of the dogs identified as Ravindra Jaikissoon also known as ‘Avinash’, with manslaughter.

Permaul’s wife, Sandra Permaul, 61, a housewife, reported that her husband left home around 5 pm on Monday and went to a liquor shop in Toopoo Village, Corentyne, where he was imbibing alcohol and became intoxicated.

While returning home in the late hours of the evening, the man reportedly stopped on the corner of the street and fell asleep.

According to the woman, around 5 am on Tuesday, she received information from her son Yoganand Permaul that her husband had been killed by the three dogs.

The son reported that he was walking up the street when he heard a commotion where he noticed that three pit bull dogs had breached the fence of the yard and were biting Permaul who at that time had appeared to be motionless.

The police were immediately summoned to the scene where they examined Permaul’s body and noticed what appeared to be dog bites on both of his legs and his neck. Dog bites were also seen on his right hip and right hand.
