Fire razes house at four Miles Bartica

A fire of unknown origin destroyed a house that belonged to Julissa Roberts, a 32-year-old housewife and Tavis Callender, a 33-year-old miner, at about 9 on Wednesday night at Four Miles (Squatting Area), Bartica, Essequibo River.

The police said in a statement yesterday that the destroyed building was an unpainted wooden house, measuring 23 × 25 feet. Investigations so far revealed that the house was powered by several solar panels.

At around 4 pm on Wednesday, the police say that Julissa and Travis secured their home and went to Bartica with their three children. At about 9 pm, Travis said he received a call from a neighbour who informed him that his house was on fire. On arrival from Bartica, he observed that his house was engulfed in flames. Public-spirited persons made efforts to put out the fire but their efforts were futile. The fire was eventually quenched by Water tender #98 and Water Browser #11 from the Guyana Fire Service.

The estimated value of the loss is $4m.
