Cassandra Jaikaran has been presented with a Guyana Legal Aid Clinic book prize which is conferred annually in the memory of the late Senior Counsel Miles Greeves Fitzpatrick.

A release from the legal aid clinic said that the presentation for the 2022/2023 academic year took place on January 25th at its Georgetown office.

The prize – in the form of books to the value of USD500.00 – was established in 2019 in memory of  Fitzpatrick, a founder member and former director of the clinic and lifelong advocate for equal access to justice. It is awarded for the best performance in legal aid by a Guyanese student at the Hugh Wooding Law School.

The presentation was made by Fitzpatrick’s widow Sultana Fitzpatrick in the presence of   Shellon Boyce, the clinic’s managing attorney, directors and staff of the clinic, Timothy Jonas SC of de Caires, Fitzpatrick & Karran and Jed Vasconcellos, a colleague of  Jaikaran’s at Hughes, Fields and Stoby.

Jaikaran, currently an associate with Hughes, Fields & Stoby, also holds a BSc in Economics and an MBA and owns a logistics business.

She chose Commercial Litigation: Pre-Emptive Remedies, Commonwealth Caribbean Land Law and Non-Conten-tious Probate Practice in the English speaking Caribbean as her prize.

In remarks preceding the presentation,  the release said that Boyce congratulated  Jaikaran on her achievement and hoped that she would seek to continue the legacy of  Fitzpatrick as a humanitarian with a deep commitment to social justice.
