Where do South American countries stand on Venezuela’s claim?

Dear Editor,

In the Feb. 9, 2024) Stabroek News, it was stated by Kit Nascimento in his letter titled ‘Best’s criticism of Guyana’s defence policy etc.’ that’ all but one South American nation has declared its unqualified opposition to Venezuela’s claim on the Essequibo’.

I’m absolutely sure that this is a false statement because I’ve always known that the Spanish speaking countries of Latin America have from 1962 supported Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo. If this situation has changed, then Guyanese need to know.for obvious reasons.

So, can you bring the Guyanese populace up to date by publishing in your newspapers which of these countries support Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo and which don’t. It would be best to contact their Embassies to get accurate information.

It would also be appropriate to find out the position of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, China, Russia & any other suitable country or countries which you see fit, in this matter.

Sincerely,

Karyl D. Arthur (Mr.)
