Perennial underachievers North East La Penitence eliminated Sparta Boss to seal their place in the semi-final round

North East La Penitence will oppose Gold is Money, while Back Circle will battle Lodge All-Stars in the semi-final round of the ‘Georgetown versus the Rest’ Street-ball Championship tonight, following respective quarterfinal wins on Tuesday evening.

Staged at the Back Circle tarmac in East Ruimveldt, North East La Penitence defeated Sparta Boss 2-0. Lennox Cort recorded a brace in the victory. Cort opened the scoring in the 10th minute, dribbling his marker before rifling his shot into the back of the net.

Cort’s second conversion in the 28th minute was fortuitous in nature, as his strike took a deflection, wrong-footing the final defender and nestling into the right corner.

On the other hand, Gold is Money blanked California Square 3-0. Following a scoreless first half period, Stephon Jupiter opened the scoring in the 26th minute from the penalty mark, following the accumulation of fouls against their opponent.

Another penalty conversion two minutes later by Jupiter for another rash challenge strengthened Gold’s position at 2-0. The score-line was then sealed in the 30th minute, as Michael Oie etched his name on the scorer’s sheet, slamming his effort into the back of the net from the left of the field after receiving a pass from the right flank.

Meanwhile, Back Circle dismissed Family 2-0. Simeon Moore tallied a double for the home side. He broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, slotting home after receiving a squared pass from Cecil Jackman.

The result was then sealed five minutes later, as Moore, upon receiving a through pass, thumped his effort past the final defender.

Also, Lodge All-Stars needled Bent Street 1-0. Michael Jameel recorded the only conversion in the second minute, intercepting an errant pass before slamming his effort past the final defender.

Coordinator of the tournament, Selwyn ‘National’ Williams, said, “The powerhouse Sparta Boss has been defeated and is out of the tournament, and now we are looking at two emerging teams in Lodge All-Stars and North East La Penitence that are looking good and being dominant throughout the event, but the fear of Back Circle still being in the tournament makes them the favourite since they are on their home turf. We still have Gold and Money, who are an experienced bunch and are looking good, so we anticipate a very competitive semi-final round. We are asking all the fans to come out and support the teams.”

The event continues today at the same venue as the semi-final segment. At 21:00hrs, Gold is Money will oppose North East La Penitence, while the second fixture will pit Back Circle against Lodge All-Stars at 22:00hrs. The final and third-place encounters will occur tomorrow at the same location.

The winner of the competition will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will walk away with $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000, respectively. On the individual side, the eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) will ride away with a motorcycle.
