Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown playoffs set for Sunday

The playoff segment for the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship will be staged on Sunday at 7:00am.

This was disclosed in an official release from the tournament organizers. According to the correspondence, the deadline date for the submission of entrants will be Friday, with the playoff round commencing two days later to confirm the 32 participating teams.

Though a venue for the staging of the playoffs is yet to be confirmed, the release stated, “Widely regarded as the most famous of the street football tournaments in the country, the event is set to kick off on March 15 at the National Park. Returning after an unavoidable hiatus, the organisers are pulling out all the stops to ensure that the hugely popular tournament makes a triumphant re-entry to the football arena. Thirty-two of the top teams from Georgetown will vie for bragging rights and the right to be crowned champion over eight days of competition, along with lucrative prize money and trophies totaling in excess of $1,5 million, while an automatic berth in the national final is assured.”

Guinness Brand executive Lee Baptiste said, “We are hoping that the tournament enjoys an exciting return and is played with the same level of discipline and keen rivalry that fans became accustomed to in previous years.”

The other playing dates are March 16th, 17th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 30th, with the final set for the 31st. All matches will be staged at the National Park, Thomas Lands.

Gold is Money is the two-time defending champion after defeating Albouystown B by a 1-0 score in the previous iteration. Amongst the other major teams that have already sealed their place in the main draw are Sparta Boss, Back Circle, Sophia, Bent Street, North East La Penitence, Broad Street, California Square, Leopold Street, and Tiger Bay.
