The FIFA Men’s World Ranking, which was introduced in 1992, is a mechanism that was created to rank the competing nations in association football. Argentina is the number-ranked nation. The teams are ranked based on their respective game results in full FIFA-recognised international matches.

Eight countries, notably Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain, have held the top spot. Since August 2018, the ranking system has adopted the Elo rating structure, which is used in chess and is based on the strengths of the competing parties.
