Detective Inspector DaSilva and other ranks from Police Division #10 were crossing the Berbice River on a pontoon at Tacama Junction at around 11:30 am on 2024-03-03 when they saw a man on a motorcycle approaching the pontoon.

On noticing the two police vehicles on the pontoon, the suspect turned his motorcycle around and started riding away. The police said in a statement that ranks immediately drove off the pontoon, gave chase and held the suspect.

He was riding a black and white XR motorcycle with registration #CH 8990 and was carrying a multi-coloured haversack on his back. The suspect, Chadwain Eastman, a 34-year-old labourer of Ebini, Berbice River, was searched, along with the haversack he was carrying.

Police found a large bulky parcel, wrapped in transparent plastic in his haversack. The parcel was opened in the suspect’s presence and was found to contain leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The suspect was told of the offence committed, cautioned, arrested and taken into police custody. He was later escorted to Mackenzie Police Station along with the motorcycle. At the station, the suspected cannabis was weighed and it amounted to 4 lbs (1,814.37 grams). The suspected cannabis was photographed, marked, sealed and lodged.

Additionally, the suspect was questioned about the motorcycle and he said that in December 2023, a man from Georgetown brought the bike to Linden and sold it to him for twelve lbs of marijuana.

The suspect remains in police custody, pending charges.
