Let’s get our garbage sorted

Dear Editor,

It is very unfortunate that the powers that be in our country have not seen the obvious need to ensure that our garbage is properly collected and disposed of.

This would not only prevent the extreme pollution of our environment and the wastage of the resources that we have been generously bestowed by our Maker, but help our nation to stop  ignoring and not contributing to the essential climate safety, as we are all, individually and as a community, obligated to fulfil.

You only have to observe, as you walk along most of our streets, the vast accumulation of trash beside the roadways and in the drains and trenches.

Sometime ago, with this very aim of getting the authorities to act in this endeavour, I suggested that we should adopt the method used by other more sensitive countries, to collect garbage in the various categories, which would generally include all sorts of our domestic and industrial waste.  This is done by having it disposed of in 3 groups, each with its own container – trash that can safely be dumped in the areas designated for this, items that can be recycled, such as plastic and metal containers, and vegetable and like material that can be transformed into plant fertiliser,

There is also a system which encourages people to conserve, by which some reusable containers can be taken to special centres for a small payment.  This even helps some unemployed persons to earn some income from this activity.

Added to all this is a scheme through which citizens can place their used clothing and footwear into special bins.  These are collected by an agency that presumably refurbishes them and distributes them to the less endowed.

I am sure that most of our citizens would be willing to cooperate to get this system started.

Yours sincerely,

Roy Paul
