After losing the toss and being sent into bat at Coolidge Cricket Ground, the Guyana Harpy Eagles made the Barbados Pride bowlers yesterday on day one of their fourth round encounter, ending on 231/5 at stumps courtesy of half-centuries from Tevin Imlach and Kevlon Anderson.

The Harpy Eagles innings began steadily, with Matthew Nandu and Tagenarine Chanderpaul looking increasingly comfortable on a dead track. The duo would put on 52 for the opening partnership and were cruising before tragedy struck.

Nandu pushed a delivery from spinner Jomel Warrican to long-on and took off for a single, but Chanderpaul was caught ball-watching at the non-striker’s end and left Nandu stranded, unable to make it to his crease, run-out for 28 in the 25th over. The young opener was understandably furious and could be heard shouting “my call” after his run-out.

Skipper Tevin Imlach joined Chanderpaul, and the duo took the Harpy Eagles to 96 when Chanderpaul seemed to lose his concentration and danced down the pitch to Warrican, lofting the ball too long-on to be caught for 40 (145 balls) to leave his side two down.

However, Imlach combined with Kevlon Anderson, and together, they ground the Bajan attack into the ground, sharing a century-long stand in the process. While Imlach was conservative in his approach, Anderson showed his flair, mixing aggression with defence when needed to chalk up his second first-class fifty.

Having put on 123 for the third wicket, early in the third session, Jason Holder and Kemar Roach began to find some sideways movement with the ball, a factor that contributed to the fall of both Imlach and Anderson.

First, Imlach misread the length of Holder and feathered a catch behind to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich to give Barbados the much-needed breakthrough. Just an over later, Kemar Roach kept the right-handed Anderson on his toes, troubling him with an inswing.

Having survived an enthusiastic Leg Before Wicket (LBW) shout on the fourth ball of the 84th over, Anderson would just last one more delivery as Roach pitched up an out-swinger, which Anderson attempted to drive but could only manage to edge straight to third slip, 13 short of what would have been his third first-class century. Anderson’s 87 spanned 129 deliveries and included 16 well-struck boundaries.

Having lost two quick wickets in two overs, Kevin Sinclair and Kemol Savoury were watchful in their initial approach, but in the 90th over of the day, the left-handed Savoury (7) needlessly slashed at a short, slow, and wide ball from Holder to give the Barbados Pride another wicket. That wicket was the last action of the day, as the umpires called it.

The Guyana Harpy Eagles will resume today at 231/5, with Kevin Sinclair unbeaten on 5. Holder has figures of 2/29 (15.2 overs) thus far, while Roach took 1/35 (20 overs).
