Police are seeking legal advice following the crash that resulted in the death of Aaron Leitch, a 34-year-old District Crop Extension Officer attached to the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute along the Tacama trail, Ituni, Region Ten on the morning of January 31.

This is according to Regional Commander Superintendent Guy Nurse when contacted by Stabroek News for an update. He said that the details of the investigation were sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The crash involved a pickup, PAC 3958, owned by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission  and attached to the Food and Agriculture Organisation. It was being driven at the time by Nigel Hutson, 50, of Georgetown, with occupants, Gregory Grenville, 39, of Amelia’s Ward, Linden; Arafat Fazal, 37, a Bangladeshi national, and Leitch.

Enquiries revealed that the pickup was proceeding east along the Tacama trail at a fast rate and while negotiating a bend, the driver lost control causing the vehicle to leave the trail and topple several times before coming to a halt.

The driver and occupants sustained injuries. They were picked up by public-spirited persons – Leitch was the only one unconscious at the time – and rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex. Leitch was pronounced dead on arrival. Fazal was admitted and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Grenville and Hutson were treated and sent away.
