Lorry driver on $300,000 station bail over death of schoolboy

Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus yesterday confirmed that the driver involved in the accident which resulted in the death of Justin Totaram from East Canje Berbice has been placed on $300,000 station bail. 

According to Bacchus, police are currently preparing a file to be sent for advice. 

The police had reported that they are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on March, 13  at about 4 pm  on the Reliance Access Road, East Canje Berbice which claimed the life of the 12-year-old.  

According to the police, motor lorry # GMM 5087 owned by a businessman of New Amsterdam, Berbice and driven by a 64-year-old resident of Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice and attached to the Rose Hall Sugar Estate struck Totaram, a student of the New Amsterdam Secondary School. 

Totaram’s parents had said that the  lad was heading to a nearby church to play basketball. 

Residents in the area have reported that the  lad attempted to retrieve his basketball when he was struck by the lorry.

The lorry driver had told investigators that a resident shouted at him to stop and upon exiting the lorry he noticed the lad’s body under the vehicle.
