East Canje student dies in lorry accident

The Police say that they are investigating a fatal accident which occurred yesterday  at about 4 pm  on the Reliance Access Road, East Canje, Berbice and which claimed the life of 12-year-old Justin Totaram.  Motor lorry # GMM 5087 owned by a businessman of New Amsterdam, Berbice and driven by a 64- year-old resident of Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice and attached to the Rose Hall Sugar Estate struck Totaram, a student of the New Amsterdam Secondary School. Meanwhile, the New Amsterdam Secondary School expressed sorrow at the death.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Justin Totaram, one of our beloved Grade 8 students. Justin passed away this afternoon after being involved in an accident on the East Canje Public Road.

“Justin was a brilliant student who was deeply committed to his academic journey. He was the heart and soul of our under-16 basketball team and was working very hard to improve his basketball skills before his passing. He was eagerly looking forward to representing his school in the upcoming junior basketball tournament. Justin was a kind, caring, courteous, and pleasant student, and he was adored by all his friends and teachers. His impact on our lives, though brief, was significant. His death has left us all in a state of shock, and it will undoubtedly take some time to come to terms with.

“On behalf of the administration, staff, and students of NA Multi, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Justin’s family, relatives, and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace”, a statement from the school said.
