After commencing with 32 teams, the quarterfinal round in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown edition will take centre stage as the final eight sides battle tomorrow evening at the National Park tarmac in Thomas Lands for a place in Sunday’s semi-final segment.
The eight remaining teams are two-time defending champions: Gold is Money, Back Circle, Albouystown Warriors, Unstoppable, North Ruimveldt, Lodge, Laing Avenue, and North East La Penitence. In the opening match at 19:30hrs, Lodge will lock horns with Laing Avenue, while the second encounter of the evening will pit Unstoppable against North Ruimveldt at 20:15 hrs. Gold is Money, in their pursuit of an unprecedented third consecutive divisional title, will then take centre court against the Albouystown Warriors at 21:00 in the third fixture.
Meanwhile, the final match of the evening can be considered a virtual final as former champion Back Circle locks horns with perennial contenders North East La Penitence at 21:45 hrs.
The respective winners of the aforesaid matches will advance to the semi-final section, while the resultant losers will compete in the plate segment on Sunday at the same venue. According to the tournament organisers, “The tournament has certainly illustrated that hunger remains for this format and that new teams have emerged to challenge the hegemony of the traditional powerhouses. Among the eight teams that have emerged to reach this level, four can be considered relatively new to this arena, which indicates that the sport is advancing and has a bright future. All four matches are highly anticipated, and it is anyone’s guess given the results that have been produced since the tournament’s commencement as to who will secure berths in the semi-final section.”
