Five acres of rice field at Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast have been converted into a recreational space at a cost of $30 million compliments of a city business-man with ties to the area.

Joe Jagmohan of International Imports and Supplies located at Lot 15 Garnett Street, Campbellville has dedicated the Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) facility to the memory of his late mother, Chano Jagmohan.

Speaking at the recent inauguration of the community ground, Jagmohan fondly recalled his childhood in Hampton Court, where he enjoyed playing cricket and other sports. He said he had noticed a lack of recreational facilities for youths since the sale of land by the Sankar family.

Determined to fill this void, he said, he envisioned the ground as a place for promoting culture and sports for the entire community, regardless of religion. The aim is to engage community members continuously.

That engagement began at the inauguration, the highlight of which was a softball cricket tournament with 14 teams competing for prizes totalling $1,400,000. Additionally, special awards and trips were presented to outstanding players, and teams received ram sheep as gifts. The event brought the community together, fostering camaraderie as the games unfolded.

Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir praised Jagmohan’s efforts, recognising the dedication required to build such a facility. He urged users to maintain the ground diligently. Nadir expressed confidence in further development, anticipating a grander memorial cricket match next year.

Region Two Chairperson Vilma De Silva commended Jagmohan and his team for their initiative.
