At approximately 5:49 am today, the Guyana Power and Light Inc. experienced a transmission line trip at its Kingston facility.

A release from the utility said “Our team discovered that a guy-wire had burst and made contact with the L5 Transmission line. At the time, the L5 line was transmitting a total of approximately 15 Megawatts (MWs) of generation.

“This sudden loss of generation caused a ripple effect on the grid resulting in several generating units going offline. Consequently, service to customers in Demerara and Berbice was disrupted.

“Our team immediately commenced restoration efforts and at approximately 6:13 hrs the first area in Demerara was repowered. Incremental restoration continued until remedial work on the L5 Transmission Line was completed and at 7:34 hrs all areas were repowered”.

GPL said that it remains cognizant of the inconveniences associated with the unplanned service interruptions and continues to “work assiduously” towards eliminating these occurrences.

GPL and the government have come in for strong criticism over the recent spate of our outages.
