Tripped transmission lines caused Wednesday shutdown

GPL’s Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System suffered a shutdown on Wednesday as a result of tripped transmission lines.

At approximately 5.26 am on Wednesday, two transmission lines – the L5; linking the Sophia and Kingston Substations, immediately followed by the L17; linking the Good Hope and Colombia Substations tripped.

At the time of the trip, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said that these Transmission Lines were transferring approximately 18.6 Megawatts (MWs) of power.

“This sudden loss of power caused a cascading effect on the grid resulting in a shutdown of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS)”, GPL said.

Power restoration efforts began immediately and at approximately 5.41 am the first area in Demerara was repowered. Incremental restoration continued until all areas in Demerara and Berbice were repowered at around 6:38 am.

“Our Company remains cognisant of the inconveniences associated with unplanned service interruptions and continues to work assiduously towards minimizing these occurrences”, GPL said.
