Cleanup of Stabroek Market wharf collapse site ongoing

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, yesterday conducted a follow-up visit to the site of the Stabroek Market Wharf collapse. During his visit, he was briefed on the progress of clearing and rubble removal efforts from Wednesday’s collapse.

A release from the ministry said that Benn emphasised the importance of safety measures for all workers involved in the cleanup operations. He underlined the necessity of proper attire, including safety wear, gloves, helmets, and appropriate footwear, to ensure the well-being of all individuals engaged in the task.

Benn further directed the ranks of the Guyana Police Force and the Mayor and City Council to take control of the site, ensuring the smooth and organised execution of cleanup operations.

A team from the Ministry of Home Affairs was also present on site, providing essential support and assistance to complement the ongoing efforts

Meanwhile, a separate release from the Ministry of Public Works said that Minister in the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar and Minister of Local Government, Sonia Parag yesterday morning inspected the ongoing cleanup works.

Indar noted that more personnel were on the site yesterday to assist with the removal of debris.

Parag commended the work of the labourers who worked until approximately 10 on Wednesday to remove the debris. The Minister said safety precautions are being maintained around the site.

An excavator and pontoon are currently facilitating the ongoing cleanup efforts.

Five persons sustained minor injuries after the condemned roof of the Stabroek Market wharf collapsed on Monday. Vendors near the wharf told  Stabroek News that they heard a loud cracking sound as the structure came down.
