Paradise girl, 14, dies after struck by car

A 14-year-old Belladrum Secondary School student was killed yesterday afternoon after she reportedly ran into the path of an oncoming car on the Number 41 Public Road, West Coast Berbice.

According to police reports, Renesha Small of Lot 7 Paradise Village West Coast Berbice, was killed at around 2 pm yesterday when she was hit by motor car HD 4290 driven by 45-year-old Thomas Crawford of New Amsterdam.

The police said reports indicated that the car was proceeding east along the northern side of the public road at about 80 kilometres per hour when the child disembarked a minibus, which was on the southern side of the road, and ran into the path of the car.

As a result of the collision with the car the child sustained injuries and fell onto the road. She was picked up in an unconscious condition by a public-spirited citizen and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where she died whilst receiving treatment. The report said a  breathalyser test was conducted and three microgrammes of alcohol were found in Crawford’s breath. A notice of intended prosecution was served to Crawford.  The vehicle was examined, police said, and measurements were taken.

The child’s body is at Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting post-mortem examination.
