Guyana registers mixed fortunes on team tournament opening day

Caribbean Junior Table Tennis Championships

Guyana recorded mixed team results on the opening day of the Caribbean Junior Table Tennis Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, as the U-15 girls defeated Jamaica and the U-19 boys lost to Puerto Rico.

Guyana defeated Jamaica 3-1 to commence their campaign. Samara Sukhai lost to Jamaica’s Keeara Whyte 10-12, 10-12, and 4-11. However, Jasmine Billingy defeated Kayan Denton 11-3, 11-8, 7-11, and 11-8 to level proceedings at 1-1.

Akira Watson bested Kira Scott 11-3, 11-2, and 11-4 to push Guyana ahead by 2-1. Billingy then overcame Whyte 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, and 16-14 to secure the win.

Meanwhile, Guyana went down to powerhouse Puerto Rico 0-3. Despite leading 2-0, Jonathan Van Lange lost 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 7-11, and 9-11 to Yadier Lopez. Colin Wong was then defeated 11-13, 7-11, and 6-11 by Oscar Birriel, before Krystian Sahadeo went down to Jerell Montijo 9-11, 7-11, and 5-11.

The event continues today with another round of matches.
