A section of the Mackenzie Market was ravaged by a fire around 9 pm last night,  according to Linden Mayor Sharma Solomon.

Solomon when contacted by Stabroek News said that due to the promptness of the fire service, other sections of the market were saved.

While thankful that the vendors who ply their trade at the public market are unhurt and the edifice was not completely destroyed, Solomon however expressed concerns at the livelihoods of these vendors being affected because of the fire.

He said that as the mining town is currently gearing to observe its annual town week slated for April 26th – May 6th, 2024, the spirits of these vendors will be downcast.

Solomon said that he was able communicate with officials of the Linden Electricity Company and he stressed the need for rewiring.
