East Coast butchers fined over slaughtering of animal

Troy Ward, a 51-year-old butcher of Lot 66 Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and Aubrey Josiah, 59, also a butcher, of Lot 12 Duke Street, Golden Grove, ECD, appeared on Wednesday before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court where they were charged with failure to give notice of intention to slaughter, and failure to produce the skin of an animal, contrary to Section 14 of the Cattle Stealing Prevention Act, Chapter 9:03.

They were also charged with possession of meat for which no reasonable account can be given, contrary to Section 15 of the Cattle Stealing Prevention Act, Chapter 9:03.

Both Ward and Josiah pleaded guilty and were each fined $25,000 or three months’ imprisonment for failure to produce skins of animals slaughtered, and $25,000 or three months’ imprisonment for possession of meat for which no reasonable account can be given. Additionally, they were each fined $10,000 or one month’s imprisonment for failure to give notice of intention of slaughter.

Magistrate Hughes also ordered that the meat be confiscated.
